Memory sticks
by Mr Hancox - Friday, 4 November 2011, 09:51 PM

STATEMENT

When you have finished using your external USB memory stick you can just pull it out of the USB slot.

Is this statement correct? YES NO

Hopefully you chose ‘no’. But, if this is correct, why shouldn’t you yank out the device?

ANSWER

When an external storage device such as a USB memory stick or an external hard disk is connected to the computer it becomes part of the operating system and it appears as an extra drive letter in the filing system.

The operating system will now treat the device in the same way as any other drive on the internal hard disk, writing and reading files to and from it.

Should you disconnect the external device without letting the operating system know about it, it could be in the middle of a ‘read’ or ‘write’ operation. This may cause corruption of the file or even the entire filing system on the memory device.

Therefore, you should always use the “safely remove hardware” application that is part of the operating system. In this way, the operating system can disconnect the device properly and your files will not be at risk of corruption.

The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists. It's also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity. As such it applies both to the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course. Anyone who uses Moodle is a Moodler.
